20-05-2021:
Hi Everyone, It is been quite longtime and we did not post anything on this blog. This pandemic has disturbed everyone of us now and I hope it ends soon.

Now coming back to the topic, As you all know by this time that Google I/O has happened on May 18th, 2021 and we got Android 12 Public Beta 1. Google said that this will by far the biggest update in terms of UI/UX after Android Lollipop back in 2013. Google is calling this new UI as "Material You" UI.

I know very few of us have pixel devices to try this new beta update right away (especially in India). This can be due to various reasons like pixel devices are often released at much higher prices in India when compared to rest of the world and also Google just skip India for their mobile phone releases (Pixel 4, Pixel 5).

In this blog, I will explain you the steps in which you can try this Android 12 beta on your device irrespective of manufacturers. Only prerequisite is your device should be on Android 11.

If you remember, Android 8.0 re-architected the Android OS framework (in a project known as Treble) to make it easier, faster, and less costly for manufacturers. From this update, Google is release a generic system image (GSI) version with every new update.

Steps to preview Android 12:

1. You should enable "developer options" on your mobile device. You can enable them by going to Setup->About->Build Number. Now tap 7 or more times on build number and you will see a toast message saying developer options are enabled.

Tap on Build number continuously until you see toast message

 2. Now go to Developer Options->DSU Loader->Select ARM64+GMS
DSU = Dynamic System Updates.
ARM64 version will not have any Google Apps.
ARM64+GMS version will have Google Apps.

3. DSU Loader will automatically fetch the latest available GSI version from Google and create a virtual dynamic partition in your phone. In my phone it is of 8GB which is very less because when checked, system itself is taking around 6GB and there will be no/very less space for apps and files.

4. Once it download and installs the GSI, you will see a notification to restart.

5. Once you restart, you will be booted to GSI. As we installed GMS version, you need to setup Google account and stuff like a new phone after boot. Ofcourse you can always skip it.

Steps to revert back to your previous OS:

One of the main reason I recommend this way of installing GSI is, it will not wipe your data or OS. It is the easiest way of previewing latest GSI and reverting back to old operating system.

1. Expand the notification center, you will see a notification from DSU manager with message "Currently running a dynamic system. Restart to use the original Android version" - Restart. Click on "Restart" and you will be back to your original OS.

My initial thoughts about Android 12:

It is now more like Samsung's One UI. You will see everything in settings starts from 1/3rd of the screen real estate.

It is super smooth even when screen refresh rate is set to default 60 Hz. All the new animations are slick.

Dark mode changes background to GREY and not Black.

There are few improvements about app privacy settings.

Widget selection UI got updated.

Notification panel got redesigned. But as this is GSI, we do not see the change.

Volume panel got changed completely and now it is very thick.
