Happy May Day!

From past few days we are seeing spy shots of MIUI 12. Now Xiaomi has finally released MIUI 12 beta version. It is a china build. Though Poco F1 is not officially supported device for MIUI 12, I have managed to install it on my phone. (Ported from MI8)

To start with, there are a lot of changes in MIUI 12. We have seen manufacturers just incrementing the versions with no real updates to the features in the past. This time Xiaomi updated almost everything from UI to system applications.

First things first, the moment I completed initial setup, I changed the keyboard to Google Keyboard.

Below are some of the new features that I have observed so far in MIUI 12

1. Live Wallpapers

Xiaomi calls them "Super smooth wallpapers".
You have to see them in person. The transition from AOD (always on display) to Lockscreen then to Homescreen after unlocking device is just amazing. Its buttery smooth. Now I don't know how much battery it consumes for these wallpapers but they are by far one of the best wallpapers I have seen.

I will add the wallpaper transition in the video at the end of this article.

Not just that, the brightness of the wallpaper sets according to your local time.

2. Settings Page

One of the main reasons why I didn't like MIUI before is because of its flasshy and cluttered UI. This time it is very clean and minimal. I liked it very much.

3. Sounds

Like every release, this time too the ringtones and notification sounds got upgraded. Even more interesting thing is when you select Nature drops as notification sound, it gives you different drop sound for every message. When you select mi remix as ringtone, it automatically detects if it is spam call and gives different ringtone. I tested it with Amazon delivery guy phone and got amazed by this feature.

4. Notification Panel

It is very iOS-ish . When drop down on left side it brings the notification Panel and when do it on right side it brings quick settings.

5. Contacts and Call UI

There is a feature to get details about the caller. But seems its limited to China for now. The UI is changed and it is very clean

6. System Apps

Below are the few system apps that's got the UI update.

7. Floating Windows

We have few 3rd party apps on playstore but they are not worthy. This feature staright from OS is interesting and I have used it couple of time without interacting with ongoing application. There are 2 ways of opening floating windows. One is from multitasking / recents and other is when you receive a notification, slowly drag down the alert.

Currently there are less number of supported apps. But good to see other than system applications like WhatsApp, Facebook are supported.

You no longer need YouTube subscription to run in the background 🤩

8. Dark mode 2.0

Almost every application now supports dark mode. Not just that, when dark mode is enabled the contrast of you screen is automatically adjusted so that it doesn't cause eye strain in dark environments. As I have said earlier, even wallpaper brightness adjusts to darkmode and local time.

9. Health Tracking

Without any fitness tracker, now you can track your steps, distance covered, set sedentary remainder, etc. Not enough? You track you sleep quality with your phone directly. However for this you need keep your phone next to you on bed. I don't recommend it as it can cause health issues.
